Introduction: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is a well-known traditional medicinal plant used for therapeutic effects in both Unani and Ayurvedic System of Medicine. It has been founded to have many therapeutic activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and anti-gout properties. It is also useful in the management of cough, dyspepsia, loss of appetite, relaxed sore-throat, retching, spasms / spasmodic affections of the stomach, vomiting. The present study aimed towards the evaluation of the parameters involved in the determination of the quality and purity of Zingiber officinale Rosc. rhizome and its standardization. Methods: Organoleptic characters, extractive values, ash values, phyto-chemical analysis, TLC, HPTLC, fluorescence analysis and HPLC profile etc. were the parameters used for the standardisation of the test drug. Results: Total ash values, water, alcohol and Ether soluble extractive values and volatile oil percentage was found to be 7.60%, 11.23%, 8.55%, 2.5% and 3.75% respectively. TLC profile of Z. officinale Rosc shows 05 and 13 spots in UV short and exposure in anisaldehyde-sulphuric acid respectively. The HPLC pattern shows 29 peaks and the peak no. 2, 7 and 5 are major peaks having area concentration and retention time as 9.64% at 2.66 min, 10.12% at 3.25 min. and 15.22% at 3.61 min. respectively. Conclusion: The study will provide referential information for the good quality, purity and identification for the future batches of Zingiber officinale Rosc.

It has been reported to have many therapeutic activities like antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective and cardioprotective properties. It is also useful in the management of insomnia and CNS disorders. The present study aims towards the evaluation of the parameters involved in the determination of the quality and purity of Nardostachys jatamansi rhizome and its standardization. Methods: Organoleptic characters, extractive values, ash values, phyto-chemical analysis, TLC, fluorescence analysis and HPLC profile etc. were the parameters used for the standardisation of the test drug. Result: Total ash values, water and alcohol soluble extractive values, moisture contents and volatile oil percentage was found to be 7.08%, 3.54%, 2.5%, 8.6% and 02% respectively. TLC profile of N. jatamansi shows 04, 08 and 10 spots in UV short and long wavelength and exposure to iodine vapours respectively. The HPLC pattern shows 34 peaks and the peak no. 01 and 08 are major peaks having area concentration and retention time as 25.974% at 2.8 min. and 29.967% at 4.399 min. respectively. Conclusion: The study will provide referential information for the good quality, purity and identification for the future batches of Nardostachys jatamansi.
Introduction: Arthritis (Wajaul Mafasil) is a condition which is growing worldwide due to lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors. In Unani literature, there are many herbs which are praised for treatment of Arthritis. So polyherbal formulation contains Ginger, Colchicum and Nux- Vomica is taken in combination for arthritis study. This combination is not previously reported but used by unani practitioners. Method: Three crude herbs (Ginger, Colchicum and Nux vomica) were extracted out in both aqueous and hydro-alcoholic solvent. LD-50 of all extracts (aqueous and hydro-alcoholic extract) was determined. Now respective extracts were mixed in effective dose ratio to obtain aqueous and hydro-alcoholic dosage form. Finally both effective combinations (aqueous and hydro-alcoholic) convert into tablet dosage form to determine its anti-arthritic activity by Carrageenan Induced Oedema Test, Cotton Pellet Induced Granuloma Test and Freund’s adjuvant Induced Arthritis Test. The efficacy of the Unani formulation was compared with reference drug (Diclofenac sodium). Result and Discussion: in Carrageenan Oedema Test, animals in high dose hydro-alcoholic, shows decrease in paw volume significantly after 3 hours of Carrageenan injection. In Cotton Pellet Induced Granuloma Test, animals in high dose hydro-alcoholic, shows reduction in granuloma formation significantly. In Freund’s Adjuvant Induced Arthritis Test, The significant reduction in paw volume was found in high dose hydro-alcoholic. Conclusion: Conclusively this study establishes anti-arthritic potential of polyherbal extract in unani literature. Thus these drugs possess synergistic anti-arthritic potential in combination against acute, sub-acute as well as chronic arthritis. So in future compatible dosages form may be prepared for treating arthritis.
