The sliding wear resistance of nitrided and carburized 18HGT low alloy steel cylindrical specimens was determined in ‘taper-three roll’ tests against 45 grade steel counter specimens. Specimens to be nitrided were hardened to 28 HRC before nitriding at 530°C for 6 h, whereas the carburizing treatment was at 930°C for 6 h followed by direct hardening and tempering. The wear characteristics were determined at the surfaces of the hardened specimens and after grinding to various depths within the diffusion layer. Hardness–depth profiles were also obtained and the layer microstructures were examined by SEM. In general, the two types of specimen showed similar wear resistance, although the nitrided steels performed better at low surface pressure (50 MPa). Seizure or accelerated wear was observed at pressures of 400 MPa and above. The surface zones showed higher wear resistances than the zones deeper in the hardened layer.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
