The composition of the body fluids of the most primitive Craniata, namely the cyclostomes, is of considerable general interest in relation to the theory advanced by Bunge in 1894 and by Macallum in 1904 that the saline composition of vertebrate blood is related to the saline composition of the primitive sea from which they originally emerged. This theory has recently been criticised by Pantin (1931), who has reviewed the literature of the subject.
