The food preferences of three rays, Raja clavata L., R. microocellata Montague and R. montagui Fowler were studied in Carmarthen Bay, South Wales. Within each species the size groups to a large extent preyed on different items. Between species, diets of R. clavata and R. montagui were the most similar. Crustaceans, mainly shrimps and crabs, were important to all three. Fish, though also consumed by R. clavata and R. montagui were the predominant food of larger R. microocellata. Cannabalism occurred occasionally.
Schaefer's and exponential models are used to predict the maximum sustainable yields (MSY) of the Nigerian inshore fish and shrimp resources. The MSY values for fish caught down to 40 and 50 m were 11684.09 and 13742.35 metric tonnes (t), respectively. For shrimp, the MSY estimated was 2008.02 t. It appeared that the inshore fishery still had room for expansion, but the shrimp resources seemed to be fully exploited under the prevailing circumstances.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
