Twenty-five years ago while visiting London, Mustarde demonstrated to me the technique to which his name is attached for bat ear correction. 1 I had used this technique almost to the letter since this time, operating on an average of 10 to 12 cases each year. When one specializes in a particular operation, over the years one's practice with that procedure tends to increase: this would not appear to be the case with prominent ears, and it has been said that one's practice remains relatively static. This has been my experience, and I am carrying out each year about the same number of cases as 10 or more years ago.Prior to Mustarde's visit, I had problems with suture infection and would have changed to a different technique, had it not been for his advice and teaching. What is the key to achieving a good result with the Mustarde operation? I see this as attention to certain minutiae of the procedure. I will first look at some general aspects of otoplasty and then go through the operative minutia that I feel are relevant to good results with this technique.
