The introduction highlights some of the current problems of technology transfer offices (OTT) in Ukraine. The world has developed effective practices for the functioning of OTT, but they do not take into account the current problems of Ukraine’s economic situation. Therefore, the purpose of the work is to study the world practices of OTT and adapt their experience to the current realities of Ukraine. Using analysis and synthesis methods, the review of foreign and domestic scientific papers and normative legal acts devoted to the practice and experience of the most famous OTT was fulfilled. Results: Based on the analysis of the best world practice of OTT, practical recommendations for the functioning of Ukrainian OTTs with regard to modern realities have been obtained. It is found that only a small number of technologies in a large portfolio of intellectual property objects can bring significant income. Conclusions. Some recommendations based on the experience of western OTT are provided to the management of domestic scientific institutions.
The article highlights modern approaches to finding potential partners in technology transfer by Ukrainian scientists. In developed countries, there are effective practical approaches that are not yet often used in the modern realities of Ukraine. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to study world practice and adapt it to local conditions. The article reviews foreign and domestic scientific publications on the practice of finding partners in technology transfer. The analysis of the best world methods allowed to develop recommendations for Ukrainian innovators. The structure of one-page technological profiles in the advertising description of the developed technology or product is analyzed in detail. It is revealed that the structure of technological profiles of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as a whole corresponds to the world standards. Two other important elements in finding a licensee, investor or strategic partner are also considered, namely the “Elevator pitch” and the structure of the 7-minute presentation. The importance of emphasizing the unique advantages of the developed technology using the matrix of comparison of the main characteristics with competitors is noted. It was found that the development and placement of a technological profile is a necessary condition for promoting the developed innovation, but almost always not a sufficient condition for success in finding a potential partner. The analysis performed in the work shows that the simple placement of advertising descriptions of technologies in catalogs and specialized databases is often not enough when looking for potential partners. Proactive approach and persistent search for licensees and investors, using the methods of direct marketing described in the article is recommended.
The article deals with the issues of the rational approach for attracting investments in the process of commercialization of R&D results in the field of biomedical science by Ukrainian scientists. Some differences between business angels, venture capital (VC), and corporate venture capital (CVC) funds have been investigated. It has been found that engagement with CVC can have several important advantages over other types of investors. Maximizing profits is not the most important task for CVC. This leads to the fact that innovators can expect better financial results when evaluating a startup by CVC comparing with a conventional VC. Corporate venture fund experts are well aware of the situation in the profile market and are able to evaluate professionally the proposed technology immediately, despite possible mistakes in the pitch presentation or business plan. An analysis of all three investor groups (business angels, VCs and CVCs) showed that CVC are equally important to Ukrainian innovators, because unlike the first two groups of potential investors, they may consider the proposed technology despite the lack of professional business managers, or successful serial entrepreneurs in a team that often happens in Ukraine. In this context, obtaining professional advice, assistance in the formation of a company team, or potential licensing are extremely important. Also, quite relevant is the increased likelihood of a better financial result when assessing by CVC and the fact that the CVC brand of a large multinational company will increase the bargaining position with other funds in subsequent rounds of investment.
