Screening tests were conducted to investigate the applicability to wastewater treatment of microalgae such as Euglena collected at several sites in Wakayama prefecture. The isolated strain Kishu was identified by performing DNA sequencing analysis, molecular phylogenetic analysis and RAPD (Random amplified polymorphic DNA) analysis. It was found from these results that the isolated strain was a new strain of Euglena gracilis. A growth rate and removal rate of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources in the synthetic culture medium of strain Kishu were higher than those of known E. gracilis strain NIES-48. Furthermore, the isolated strain successfully grew in the culture medium using the molasses and assimilated the carbon source in this medium. These results suggested that strain Kishu, the newly isolated Euglena from the pond in Wakayama, is promising candidate that can be applied for wastewater treatment of a food processing factory.
