We investigate the wear characteristics of single crystal diamonds by experimentation of wear between single crystal diamonds and optical glass (BK7). This study's purpose is to examine the cause of diamond tool wear that occurs during glass cutting. The wear volume of diamond increases with the normal load and friction velocity. We also analyzed the friction surfaces of diamond and BK7 using Raman spectroscopy. Graphite was detected from the friction area of BK7; no diamond material was detected leading to a conclusion that the diamond changed into graphite resulting in wear.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
