31Optimising ventilated packaging for fresh horticultural produce will play a key role in making future food cold chains 32 more energy-smart and resource-efficient in a cost-effective way. Package performance analysis currently lacks an 33 integrated approach for simultaneous and quantitative evaluation of product cooling rate, box ventilation, product 34 quality and shelf life, box mechanical strength and energy consumption of the ventilation system. This article 35 provides an overview of recent research on these package functionalities and summarises the performance 36 parameters used to quantify them. Novel developments in experimental and computational tools are highlighted and 37 various trade-offs encountered in package design are illustrated with case studies. Future perspectives point towards 38 a more holistic evaluation of packaging throughout the entire cold chain. 39 40
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
