This publication examines four periods of development of tourism and travel in China: the period of ancient wanderings of the first travelers and three successive periods of China’s development, namely 1949-1978, 1978 - end of the 20th century and 21st century to the present, in the context of the formation of the interaction between tourism, conservation heritage and infrastructural development of the territories of cities and places. The purpose of the study is to try to uncover this connection over a number of historical periods and justify the need for joint promotion of cultural heritage, tourism and territorial development. At the same time, special attention is paid to the research question: how the political and socio-economic context affects the theory and practice of tourism development and what is the role of tourism in the process of preserving cultural heritage and developing the infrastructure of the territories.
