This article aimed to investigate the ESL Senior High School student’s perception of Morphological Awareness Instruction and the students’ vocabulary and the significant differences of students who are trained using Morphological Awareness Instruction to enhance their reading comprehension. Two research questions were formulated, namely: First, how are the ESL Senior High School students’ understanding of the application of morphological awareness instruction to enhance their vocabulary and reading comprehension. Secondly, what are the differences of students who are trained using Morphological Awareness Instruction to enhance their vocabulary and reading comprehension with those who are not? To answer these questions, an experimental research method was implemented. The research sample consisted of 60 students of a Senior High School in Pleret, Bantul, Yogyakarta, who were selected using two phases of random sampling. The data set of questionnaires and tests were used to collect the data. The independent sample t-test was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the Morphological Awareness Instruction significantly improved students’ vocabulary skills and their reading comprehension.
This paper aimed to explore the categories of speech acts used by Travis Parker as the main character of The Choice movie. Data were collected using a qualitative method and analyzed using a descriptive analysis technique. Results showed that the main character used directive and expressive speech acts. The directive ones included the acts of ordering, commanding, warning, suggestion, requesting, forbidding, and inviting. Specifically, the act of ordering something appeared once, commanding four times, giving a suggestion once, requesting twice, forbidding twice, and inviting someone once. Furthermore, the expressive function included the acts of apologizing, thanking, greeting, and compliment. Specifically, the act of apologizing for someone appeared six times, giving thanks once, greetings three times, and giving a compliment three times. Exploring the roles and context of speech acts in The Choice movie from a sociolinguistic perspective will contribute to English learning-teaching.
This study explored the challenges and the way how the teachers cope with their challenges. This study is a qualitative study which employed a narrative inquiry. Six participants from two different schools in NTT were participated in this study. They were English teachers, German teacher, mathematics teacher, history teacher and Geography teacher. In gathering the data, the researcher did a deep interview with the participants through Whatsapp voice note. In analyzing the data, the researcher did an interview transcript to note the participants’ responses. The researcher found that the participants had some difficulties in doing online learning such as their own ability about technology, students’ participation, students’ devices and ineffective learning. From those difficulties, they have a good self regulation to make a management time in order to make an effective learning and motivate the students to ignore their boredom. However, there was still a teacher who still had lack self efficacy since she had low ability in applying the technology devices in online learning. She had less confidence in doing online learning.
