The schematic or one-line diagram model of the power systems provides an accurate mathematical model for load flow analysis, but it does not take the actual geographic condition of network into account. The power systems are spread geographically so spatial attributes of the network improves distribution system operation and the decision making process. The modern GIS plays an important role in power system analysis and planning by providing network topology and visualization of actual field conditions in the form of geographic maps. The real-time device measurement data and spatial data are the cornerstone of the Smart Grid applications for advanced distribution system analysis. The existing spatial databases can be enhanced by including spatio-temporal features and timeseries measurement data to transform it into a Device Data Management System (DDMS). The CIM-enabled DDMS integration can then be used to visualize real-time and historical power system events over a period of time to improve distribution system operation, asset management and planning processes.
