Evaluation of the fire performance of building materials is being conducted in Japan in accordance with ISO 5660-1. There is concern that sandwich panels containing combustible cores can pass certain classification criteria based on this small scale test even though they could be ignited and burn in actual fires including flashover. Within ISO/TC92/SC1, the ISO 13784-1 test addresses the evaluation of self-standing sandwich panels, but it is difficult to be routinely performed. This study proposes an intermediatescale self-standing box test that a) has the same configuration as the ISO/TS17431 box test and b) compares this new proposed test with the ISO 13784-1 test both conducted for the first time in Japan in this program. A correlation between these two test methods (the new box test and ISO 13784-1) is also presented.
The high mound is sometimes constructed behind a composite breakwater in order to increase the sliding resistance and utilize the mound for an aquacultural purpose. The high mound must be covered by armor units with adequate weight to prevent from scattering by overtopping waves . However, the shallower is the submerged depth of the mound, the heavier become the armor units.This study proposed a backward parapet as a countermeasure to reduce weight of armor units . A numerical simulation showed the difference in the velocity field behind the caisson between the backward and forward parapet. With the backward parapet, large-scale eddies were not observed and the velocity on the mound was slower than that of the forward parapet. Furthermore , hydraulic model tests showed that the stable weight was approximately 40% less than that of the forward parapet .
Ports and fishing ports in cold regions in Hokkaido freeze during winter. Changes in sea level after ice sheets have adfrozen to port facilities, such as floating structures, quays and breakwaters, create vertical ice loads. Floating structures often suffer damage from sea ice, making it important to consider the influence of the sea ice in the design of such structures in cold regions.In this study, investigations of sea ice conditions were conducted to estimate ice loads, and the distribution of ice thickness and the area range where the ice sheet undergoes flexural failure were clarified.
