Ore processing is a source of soil heavy metal pollution. Vegetation traits (structural characteristics such as spatial cover and repartition; biochemical parameters—pigment and water contents, growth rate, phenological cycle…) and plant species identity are indirect and powerful indicators of residual contamination detection in soil. Multi-temporal multispectral satellite imagery, such as the Sentinel-2 time series, is an operational environment monitoring system widely used to access vegetation traits and ensure vegetation surveillance across large areas. For this purpose, methodology based on a multi-temporal fusion method at the feature level is applied to vegetation monitoring for several years from the closure and revegetation of an ore processing site. Features are defined by 26 spectral indices from the literature and seasonal and annual change detection maps are inferred. Three indices—CIred-edge (CIREDEDGE), IRECI (Inverted Red-Edge Chlorophyll Index) and PSRI (Plant Senescence Reflectance Index)—are particularly suitable for detecting changes spatially and temporally across the study area. The analysis is conducted separately for phyto-stabilized vegetation zones and natural vegetation zones. Global and specific changes are emphasized and explained by information provided by the site operator or meteorological conditions.
Air transport systems evaluation infrastructure (IESTA) is an evaluation facility for air transport systems that is currently being developed by Onera in Toulouse, France. The project aims at building a generic simulation platform, designed to ease the integration of new or existing models in order to assess air transport concepts. The first IESTA application, Clean Airport, allows the assessment of the effects of innovative concepts with regard to air traffic noise and chemical pollution on the airports' surroundings. An effective simulation capability has been built and achieved by integrating Onera's expertise in physical modelling. This article gives an overview of the resulting model toolbox architecture, the first outputs and the validation walkthrough.
The characterization of sands detailed in this paper has been performed in order to support the in-flight radiometric performance assessment of space-borne optical sensors over the so-called Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites (PICS). Although the physical properties of PICS surface are fairly stable in time, the signal measured from space varies with the illumination and the viewing geometries. Thus, there is a need to characterize the spectro-directional properties of PICS. This could be done on a broad scale, thanks to multi-spectral multi-directional space-borne sensors such as the POLDER instrument (with old data). However, interpolating or extrapolating the spectro-directional reflectance measured from space to spectral bands of another sensor is not straightforward. The hyperspectral characterization of sand samples collected within or nearby PICS could contribute to a solution. In this context, a set of 31 sand samples was compiled. The BiConical Reflectance Factor (BCRF), linked to Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF), was measured between 0.4 and 2.5 µm, over a half hemisphere when the amount of sand in the sample was large enough and for only a single fixed angular configuration for small samples. These optical measurements were complemented by grain size distribution measurements and mineralogical analysis and compiled together with previously published measurements in the so-called PICSAND database, freely available online.
