Imaging Luminance and Color Measuring Devices (ILMD, ICMD) also called Array Detectors in combination with adapted measuring lenses provide effective one-shot solutions to evaluate modern Near-Eye Displays (NED). Basic parameters of those lenses depend on the NEDarrangements under test. Corresponding equations are deducted. The application of two new measuring lenses shows a way to generate a series of measuring lenses. MotivationThe search for appropriate commercially available lenses to evaluate Near-Eye Displays (NED) has not been successful in the last years. One reason is the manifold of NED-architectures [1] and their running development [2]. A luminance measuring device (LMD) which uses only a single element detector provides integral results inside the captured field of view [3]. Cameras / array detectors with image sensors (either an Imaging Luminance or an Imaging Color Measuring Device -ILMD/ ICMD short for both IxMD) provide a 2D-distribution of electrical signals and enable a spatial allocation to the emitting display. Calibration procedures permit a lot of corrections like dark signal, dark signal non-uniformity (DSNU), non-linearity, photo response non-uniformity (PRNU) and distortion. The image sensor works differently from the nominal NED-receptor, the human eye. One example is the scanning move of the human eyeball, which avoids any Moiré-effect. The use of classical digital lenses for IxMD has limited success [1]. These lenses are designed for a certain field of view and a defined image sensor. The main problem of these lenses is the position of their entrance pupil (EP) inside the lens packaging. The optical arrangement in [4] has an EP in front of lens packaging and generates a reel intermediate image. This type of imaging is also called conoscopic [5]. It enables a spatially resolved measurement of displayluminance. The field of view is limited to ±15° in this example [4]. A scanning arrangement for luminance measurement in a much smaller field is proposed in [6]. NED-suppliers ask for cost-effective IxMD-solutions adapted to their actual instrument structure. The wide range of fields of view (FOV) and of NED-resolutions (latest expressed in display pixel per degree [DPX/°]) needs to be taken into consideration. From our experience of creating IxMDs we offer a set of formulas to determine the basic parameters of IxMD-lenses for different NED-concepts. More and more, the suppliers of near‐to‐eye displays (NED) are seeking cost‐effective imaging luminance and color measurement solutions that are adaptable to their instrument structures. Here, the authors offer a set of formulas that determine the basic parameters of imaging luminance and radiance measurement devices and lenses for different NED‐concepts.
