In the current context of boosting economic growth based on agriculture, the traditional determinants seem insufficient. It is therefore necessary to establish the role of non-classical factors that influence the evolution of agricultural exports. Thus, this paper aims to establish the role of transportation infrastructure in determining coffee exports in Togo's economy. Firstly, the principal component analysis technique is used to construct a proxy of transportation infrastructure. Then the Error Correction Model is estimated under the gravity model framework. The data used in this study come mainly from FAO database, World Bank database and cover the period 1980-2014. The results reveal that transportation infrastructure is a good pillar for coffee exports enhancement in the short and long run. In addition, domestic production has a positive and significant effect on coffee exports. Regarding global factors, only the exchange rate affects long-term coffee exports. In terms of policy message, increase in transportation infrastructure investment is a strategy for increasing coffee exports.
The objective of this paper is to study the effect of emigration on the structural transformation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Structu- ral transformation is measured by the reallocation of labor from the industrial sector and services sector. The dynamic ordinary least squares method is used and has revealed that emigration contributes negatively to the reallocation of labor from the industrial sector. Only the total emigration rate negatively affects the reallocation of labor from the service sector. No statistical relationship exists between other emigration rates and the reallocation of labor from the service sector. ECOWAS countries should encourage policies aimed at capitalizing on the skills of emigrants through summer schools, following the example of the African Development Bank. They should also support industrial development while encouraging the agricultural production of intermediate goods for industrial production. This synergy promotes the reallocation of labor from the agricultural sector to the industrial sector and then to the service sector and leads to the structural transformation of economies, so much desired by the African Union.
After a long period of political instability that led to a sharp contraction of the economy and an unprecedented high level of poverty, Togo, in 2006, began the normalization of the situation. Over the past three years, considerable progress has been made by the Government. This has helped to restore a relatively calm political and social climate. These efforts were welcomed by the entire international community that cares more and more to help the country towards sustainable development. The Government should, however, step up efforts to address the major challenges like (1) consolidation of peace and social stability; (2) improving governance; (3) strengthening institutional capacity ;(4) consolidating the macroeconomic framework; (5) the rehabilitation of socio economic infrastructure; and (6) protection and improvement of living conditions of the people. As with other development partners in the country, the African Development Bank (ADB / ADF) is involved in the Togolese economic development. If these efforts are consolidated and supported with a peaceful socio-political climate, the foundations for economic growth and a sustainable economic development in Togo can be laid.
