Background:The pathology and physiology in geriatrics tend to make them consume more medications that carry a greater risk of experiencing side effects and adverse drug interactions. One of the references to evaluate drug use or prescription in geriatrics is the Beers Criteria, which describe a new type of basic guidelines, a specific guide to the treatment for geriatric population. Objective: This study aimed to determine the percentage of drug use according to the Beers Criteria. Methods: The method used was observational descriptive design in which data was taken retrospectively from the prescriptions for geriatric inpatients. Results: Forty patients (61.0%) out of a total of 65 identified geriatric inpatients experienced a potentially inappropriate drug use based on the Beers Criteria. In 40 patients, 59 drugs were found to meet the Beers Criteria with 5 types of drugs to be avoided based on the recommendation of strong scientific evidence, including 10 items of Digoxin (17.5%) 2 items of Alprazolam (3.5%), and 8 items of Ketorolac (14.0%) all in category 1, 2 items of Tramadol (3.5%) in category 2, and 35 items of Ranitidine (61, 4%) in category 3. Conclusion:The geriatric inpatients in dr. Soekardjo Hospital experienced PIMs (potentially inappropriate medications) according to the Beers Criteria.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
