India's sugar sector faces several price and non-price controls that distort prices and hinder the further development of the sector. This paper assesses the impact of policy interventions and technological change on sugar prices. It employs the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to estimate the interrelationship between sugar price and its determinants in the long run and finds that, in the long run, sugar price is significantly influenced by the recovery rate, beginning stock, jaggery price and per capita income. Further, 86% of the disturbance in the short run in sugar price is corrected within a year.
This study analyses the dietary and fish consumption patterns of Indian households and the determinants of these patterns. A hike in the price reduced demand and the probability of consumption. High-income households consumed more fish than middle-and low-income households, but low-income households spent a high proportion of their total household expenditure on fish. An increase in per capita income raised demand and the probability of consumption. Consumption is driven also by the education, age, and household head; the number of household members who earn a regular salary; and a household's food practices away from home.
This study evaluates the performance of the predominant farming systems in Tamil Nadu using primary data from 192 farmers for 2015-16, and the standard cost and stochastic frontier production function methods. Seven different predominant farming systems were identified, of which the fruits and turmeric farming systems were profitable. The marginal and small farms were more diversified, whereas the large farms were specialized, with high-value crops. The productivity in all the farming systems can be enhanced up to 40% by adopting technologies such as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI), and fertigation.
