Nearly 70-80% of the world's population relies on non-conventional medicines, often derived from herbal plants, according to World Health Organization (WHO) figure. Medicinal plants are starting material for any herbal preparation such as herbal medicines, herbal teas, herbal oil etc. These preparations are being used worldwide due to their therapeutic potential and as they are considered to be safe as compared to allopathic medicines. Lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, arsenic and mercury are the most common toxic metals that have become a matter of concern due to the reports of their contamination in various herbal preparations and herbal ingredients .Although the minimum acceptable limits have been laid out as safety concern. Heavy metal are evaluated by AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRFS, HPLC, DPP, NAA, ASV and disposable sensor applications for achieving therapeutic efficacy and evolutions of heavy metal in herbals.
Mifepristone structurally belongs to the class of anti-progesterone steroids, which are used as an oral contraceptive. The reverse phase HPLC method was designed in a simplified and rapid way for the estimation of Mifepristone in bulk as well as tablets. The method was established using a Kromasil C18 column of dimensions of 250mm×4.6mm and a particle size of 5m.The used mobile phase was Acetonitrile: Water (70:30, v/v). The pump was pumped at 1 ml/min at a temperature of about 30 ± 2 °C and the eluted analyte was identified at 305 nm. Mifepristone eluted with a mean retention time of 6.27 minutes. The intended method was validated as per ICH (International Council for Harmonisation) guidelines, indicating a high degree of specificity, system suitability, accuracy, precision, and robustness. The LOD (Limit of detection) was found to be 0.7238 ppm and the limit of measurement was 0.9562 ppm. The method linearity was found to be between 1-6µg/ml, with an R2 of 0.9923. In accuracy studies, the percent recovery was found to be between 99.39% - 100.50%. The method was discovered to be precise as the values of the percent RSD were found to be less than 2.0% for both intraday and interday. The method was discovered to be reliable and robust. Mifepristone in marketed pharmaceutical tablet dosage form was effectively quantified using the established Reverse Phase HPLC method.
Seeds of Abrus precatorius linn. (fabaceae) are used in different Ayurvedic therapeutics. Since they are poisonous, they are processed with various media like Godugdha (cow's milk), Kanji (sour gruel), Nimbu Swarasa (Lemon Juice), etc. before being incorporated into the Ayurvedic formulations. This study investigates the use of Gomutra (Cow Urine), normal saline (NaCl), and water as detoxification media. A stainless-steel vessel with a dolayantra was used to immerse the seeds for 3 hours of boiling during the detoxification process. Detoxification using Gomutra gave a reddish tinge to the seeds compared to the light brown color seen with NaCl medium. The physicochemical changes in detoxification that occurred in the gomutra treated gunja seeds were validated by TLC and Ex Vivo investigations (agglutination assay). To characterize the extract using TLC, the mobile phase was Toulene: ethyl acetate: glacial acetic acid (6.5: 3.3: 0.2). The removal of distinctive bands in the TLC profile of processed gunja seeds suggested that the gunja seed extract's composition had changed.
