Arterial Stiffness (AS) is of great interest in the prediction and the management of cardiovascular events. The evaluation of AS using 2 points of measurement of the pulse wave velocity was of considerable increasing interest in the early 21st century. This paper aimed at focusing on the modeling of different measurement methods. Several measurement techniques are presented. A review of the bibliography and an explanation of the link between cardiovascular events and arterial stiffness are summarized. Novel apparatus that were developed for determining arterial stiffness claimed superiority over pioneering methods either through greater simplicity of use, better repeatability, or a more pertinent arterial pathway.
Understanding land use / land cover (LULC) dynamic is of great importance to sustainable development in Africa where deforestation is a common problem. This study aimed to assess the historical and future dynamics of LULC in the Nakambé River Basin. Landsat images were used to determine LULC dynamics for the years 1990, 2005 and 2020 using Random Forest classification system in Google Earth Engine while the predicted LULC of 2050 was simulated using the Markov Chain and Multi-Layer-Perceptron neural network in Land Change Modeler. The findings showed significant changes in LULC patterns. From 1990 to 2020, woodland and shrubland decreased by -45% and -68% respectively while water body, cropland and bare land/built-up increased by 233%, 51%, and 75%, correspondingly. From 2020 to 2050, the results revealed that under the Business-as-usual scenario, bare land/built-up and water bodies could continue to increase by 99% and 1% respectively. However, cropland, shrubland, and woodland could decrease by -32.61%, -33.91%, and -46.86%, respectively. Under the afforestation scenario, the contrary of Business-as-usual could occur. While woodland, shrubland, and cropland would increase by 22.24%, 51.57%, and 18.13%, correspondingly, between 2020 and 2050, the area covered by water bodies and bare land/built-up will decrease by -6.16% and -39.04%, respectively. The results of this research give an insight into past and future LULC dynamics in the Nakambé River Basin and suggest the need to strengthen the policies and actions for better land management in the region.
This study compared erythrocyte changes between a group of subjects with sickle cell trait (SCT) and controls (subjects without hemoglobinopathy) during a soccer game in two conditions: with and without hydration. Erythrocyte deformability of subjects was assessed by the coefficient of erythrocyte rigidity (Tk) which was calculated before and after football match. Our results showed a significant increase in erythrocyte rigidity (Tk) in SCT at the end of physical activities without hydration; however when water was provided ad libitum their Tk decreased significantly, reaching values of controls. And adequate hydration is recommended in subjects with sickle cell trait during and after exercise.
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease with often fatal vascular events. In addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, disease-specific elements contribute to this cardiovascular mortality. The aim of this study was to assess arterial stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis and to determine the factors involved.Methods: We have recruited the black African patients followed in rheumatology and had rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis. Only patients between 18 and 60 years and meeting the American College of Rheumatology criteria were included. All controls were healthy. We evaluated the propagation velocity of the pulse wave finger-toe (PWVft) measured by the pOpmètre®.Results: Present study shows that the PWVft was significantly elevated in over half of patients (55.10%). Besides, the mean patients PWVft was significantly higher than that of the control (respectively 9.40±0.51 and 7.22±0.33 p=0.001). In the patients, no factor was significantly involved in the arterial stiffness, but cons in the control group, the PWVft was significantly correlated with age (p=0.023 and r=0.55).Conclusions: Rheumatoid arthritis patients had higher PWVft compared to controls. Due to the importance of its cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, arthritis requires a regular monitoring element as arterial stiffness, which is currently a major vascular parameter monitoring.
