Background: Gene regulation of the bone repressor sclerostin (SOST) is only poorly understood. Results: SOST gene suppression by parathyroid hormone is partially mediated by HDAC5 inhibiting MEF2, and SOST gene expression requires class I HDAC activity. Conclusion: SOST gene expression is negatively regulated by HDAC5 and positively by class I HDACs. Significance: Class I HDAC inhibitors represent a novel approach for bone forming osteoporosis therapies.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
