Ten cyanobacterial isolates from the hypersaline environment of Rann of Kutch were characterized for growth related physiological variables. A wide variability was observed in chlorophyll, protein and sugar content among the isolates. Similarly carotenoids, phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin contents also varied among the isolates. Differential activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and levels of proline were related to the ability of the strains to survive at higher salinity levels.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
