A test of awareness of articulatory gesture was administered to two groups of normal speakers, each of 27 subjects. Group I carried out the task with a tongue depressor placed in the oral cavity, while speakers in Group II responded without any interfering conditions. The similarity in findings suggests that speakers were aware of the articulatory movements associated with the speech sounds assessed.
