During recent years due to its added advantages over standard concrete, the use of high strength concrete for construction has become common, especially for multistoried structures, bridges and high rise buildings etc. As the cost of concrete is high and in of view of economy, now a day's fly ash is being used in construction replacing by mass of cement. The characteristic compressive strength of concrete is being used in design of structures, use of this value is a problem since the control specimen sizes and shapes are varying from country to country. In India, the characteristic compressive strength is usually measured based on 150 mm cubes, whereas the ACI code of practice specifies the design compressive strength based on the standard 150 x300 mm cylinder in the design of reinforced structures. In this context the size and shape of concrete is an important parameter for the compressive strength, which necessitates the study of effect of size and shape of the specimen. Hence in this study different sizes and shape of specimens are prepared cured and tested in compression at an age of 7, 28, 56 and 91 days.
A novel chitin-binding lectin was isolated from the tubers of a plant Aponogeton natans from the monocot family Aponogetonaceae, designated as ANTL (Aponogeton natans tuber lectin). The lectin agglutinated both untreated and trypsin-treated rabbit erythrocytes, as well as human blood cells of groups A, B and O with different specificities. Lectin activity is inhibited by the oligomers of N-acetylglucosamine. ANTL is a dimeric glycoprotein with molecular weight of ∼66 KDa and has two identical sub-units of 33 KDa. The carbohydrate percent is 8.2% of the total lectin. The lectin was thermo stable up to 50°C with broad pH optima (pH 4–10). ANTL is found to be potent mitogen for normal murine and human lymphocytes at the concentration as low as 1 µg/ml. Cytotoxic studies of the lectin on human U 266 cell lines has revealed that there is 50% decrease in the proliferation. The confirmation of both the hemagglutination and mitogenic proliferation activity suggests that ANTL is a Chitin-binding lectin with diverse functions. Pterygium excision by bare sclera technique was first described by Ombrain. However it is associated with recurrence rate of 9 to 75%. Conjunctival autografting is safe and cost effective method in preventing recurrence. In this study 100 cases of primary pterygium are evaluated. Mean age group was 47 years. 55% were male and 45% were females. Literature documents more incidence of pterygium in outdoor workers. This correlated with our study findings where in 66% of the patients were exposed to heat dust and sunlight while working outdoors. 89% had nasal pterygium. Most Patients (87%) had with the rule astigmatism. The average with the rule astigmatism was 2 diaptors preoperatively which decreased to 0. 67D postoperatively. In our study of 100 cases 50 underwent pterygium excision by bare sclera technique. Rest 50 underwent pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting. All cases were followed up for 6 months. In the bare sclera technique 6 (12%) cases had recurrence and none in conjunctival autograft technique (p-value < 0.05). Two cases had sclera thinning following pterygium excision which resolved after tapering steroid dosage. 2 cases had graft edema and three had loose sutures. 4 cases had granuloma formation in the bare sclera group and one had corneal scarring.
