Life style diseases are also called as the diseases of longevity or diseases of civilization. Once bacteria and virus were the prime killers in human society. But, now the studies shows that 17 million people die prematurely each year as a result of the global epidemic of largely preventable diseases or life style diseases which proves that we humans only are the killers of ourselves. Today more than 5 of 10 biggest killing diseases are caused by carelessness, ignorance and irregularities of our own. According to WHO, world deaths from life style diseases will double by 2015 unless all out efforts are taken to combat them. So it is mandatory to develop a health oriented life style than to give deep concern about our works. The scope almost fully lies on Ayurvedic concepts, because of its references of preventive measures. A report jointly prepared by the World Health Orientation and the World Economic Forum says India will incur an accumulated loss of $236.6 billion by 2015 on account of unhealthy life styles and faulty diet. As we all know, hypertension is called a silent killer, because it rarely exhibits symptoms before it damages the heart, brain or kidney. Hypertension is an important worldwide public health challenge and remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.
The general public's view of modern diet and human health has undergone drastic changes in recent years. There is general harmony that many chronic health problems, first noted in Western countries but progressively flourished worldwide, relate mainly to diet. There is far less consensus, however, about the dietary factors implicated in such health problems. This lack of understanding has opened the door to a propagation of different recommendations as to the best diet for modern humans. Let me note that all human alive today are member of the same species, Homo sapiens, and as such, all are fully "modern" humans. Dietary fats are a key example. Since the anti-fat health education initiatives of the 1980's and early 1990's, certain dietary fats have been increasingly recognized as actually beneficial to health. Diet conscious like the mainstream populace, are now getting the message that wise dietary fat choices offer essential fatty acids, blood lipid management, maintained endocrine and immune function, inflammation control, metabolic effects and even potential body composition and performance benefits. Toward this end, many companies now sell specialty dietary fat supplements and recognized health authorities have begun recommending them to certain population. Increasingly, the average consumer has come to regard the supermarket as obstacle of conflicting and potentially dangerous dietary decisions: low fat, high fat, no fat; no meat, less fatty meat; no eggs, one egg a week, unlimited eggs; less carbohydrate, more whole grains, no cereal products; more fruit, less sugar; and so on. Too much confusing information is available, much attention is paid by the popular press and public to fad diets and preliminary dietary findings, and too little attention is paid to serious dietary recommendation. The present review of studies aims to strengthen our knowledge regarding the dietary requirements, food sources, and potential benefits, Modern food and its impact on human health. Practical suggestions for incorporating healthy fats will be made. Both food-source and supplemental intakes will be addressed with interrelationships to health throughout.
Rasashastra deals with the Rasa Aushadhis, the drugs of metallic and mineral origin. Mercury is used in most of the Rasaaushadhis. The toxicity of Mineral and metallic preparations are reduced to such an extent by various procedures of Shodhana, Marana etc. that Mercury converts its inherent property of toxicity into medicinal property. Rasa Aushadhis works quickly on the body because due to their small particle size, their absorption starts from the oral mucosa itself. The action of drugs depends largely upon the Anupana i.e. the vehicle for the drug. Rasacharayas have mentioned various Rasa preparations like Bhasmas, Parpati, Pottali, Manduras, Karpooras etc. along with their doses, dose schedule and Anupana / Sahapana etc. The principles of Rasaaushadhis when correlated in modern era are found to be scientifically accurate. We may say that Rasacharyas had already mastered the science of nanotechnology, purification, action of metabolic catalysts, biotransformation and preservation of medicines. The Ayurvedic drugs can be harmful for our body when not administered in proper dosage as per mentioned in classic literatures.
The quest for excellence in mental and physical health is not new. We find various references and formulations in Ayurvedic classics meant for promoting mental and physical health of a child. Suvarna Prashan is one of the formulations explained in age old Ayurvedic classic Kashyap Samhita. This formulation is very widely used now days as a memory and immune booster for children. But there is very little systematic documented study which can be used to evaluate the efficacy of the formulation. Suvarna Bhasma was prepared in Ayurved Rasayani Pharmacy, Pune. Madhu and Ghrita were collected from KLE Ayurveda Pharmacy, Belgaum. Suvarna Bindu Prashan was prepared in KLE Ayurved pharmacy, Belgaum. It contains Suvarna Bhasma, Ghrita and Madhu. Twenty apparently healthy male and female children with age group of three to four years were ready to sign inform consent form were selected into two groups each. Subjects in Group A received Suvarna Bindu Prashan where as Group B (Control group) did not receive any treatment. Both the groups were observed for six months. Children in Suvarna Bindu Prashan group showed significant reduction in the scores of eating habits, behavior, mood, temperament and scores of event of illness. However there was no significant difference in the score of sleeping habit. There was significant increase in IQ percentage.
