Abstract. Knowledge work in many fields requires examining several aspects of a collection of documents to attain meaningful understanding that is not explicitly available. Despite recent advances in document corpus visualization research, there is still a lack of principled approaches which enable the users to personalize the exploratory analysis process. In this paper, we present IVEA (Information Visualization for Exploratory Document Collection Analysis), an innovative visualization tool which employs the PIMO (Personal Information Model) ontology to provide the knowledge workers with an interactive interface allowing them to browse for information in a personalized manner. Not only does the tool allow the users to integrate their interests into the exploration and analysis of a document collection, it also enables them to incrementally enrich their PIMO ontologies with new entities matching their evolving interests in the process, and thus benefiting the users not only in their future experiences with IVEA but also with other PIMO-based applications. The usability of the tool was preliminarily evaluated and the results were sufficiently encouraging to make it worthwhile to conduct a larger-scale usability study.
Recent developments in the Social and Semantic Web fields have resulted in large amounts of data created, published and consumed by users of the Web. The ability to easily integrate such vast amounts of data raises significant and exciting research challenges, not least of which how to provide effective access to and navigation across heterogeneous data sources. The IUI2009 workshop on Visual Interfaces to the Social and the Semantic Web aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from different fields to discuss the latest research results and challenges in designing, implementing, and evaluating intelligent interfaces supporting access, navigation and publishing of different types of contents on the Social and Semantic Web. This paper outlines the context of the workshop and provides an overview of the research to be presented at the event.
The large amount of data created, published and consumed by users on the Social and Semantic Web raises significant and exciting research challenges such as data integration as well as effective access to and navigation across heterogeneous data sources on different platforms. Building on the success of the VISSW 2009 and 2010 workshops, the IUI2011 workshop on Visual Interfaces to the Social and Semantic Web aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from different fields to discuss the latest research results and challenges in designing, implementing, and evaluating intelligent interfaces supporting access, navigation and publishing of different types of contents on the Social and Semantic Web. This paper outlines the context of the workshop.
To profit in today's market, small manufacturers must be efficient and agile to minimise cost and to meet variable market demand. This paper discusses an envisaged Semantic, Ambient, Generic and Extensible framework (SAGE) focused on the manufacturing environment. SAGE is based on the ambient intelligence philosophy which means it is focused on the human actor with the aim of aiding them to optimise their companies manufacturing processes. In order to achieve this goal SAGE combines several technologies: semantic reasoning, multi-modal communication and context-aware technologies within a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). SAGE provides the manager with intuitive access to the real-time data describing the status of the shop floor environment and the ability to automate a response. Two manufacturing processes are targeted for systemic innovation: shop floor control and machine maintenance.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
