As towns and cities developed, their characteristics manifest as the uniqueness brought by the diversity among them. However, modernization had cause the uniqueness tend to fade and lose its meaning as part of the image of a city. Kampung Bandar, the oldest historic district of Pekanbaru located on the riverside of Siak River, is no longer well-known for its prominent past. There are three historic sites that is potential to be developed as the image of the district, namely Rumah Singgah Tuan Kadi, Istana Hinggap and Rumah Tenun. This paper aims to assess how a sense of place influences the city image in the historic riverside district of Kampung Bandar based on the perceptions of its inhabitants, as well as the role of landmarks as attributes of the sense of place in the formation of the historic urban district’s image. This research used a mixed-method. Qualitative methods involve in-depth interviews with experts and community leaders, whereas quantitative methods scored sites importance according to the local community. The results of the study show that Rumah Singgah Tuan Kadi have the highest sense of place and contribute significantly to the formation of the riverside urban district’s image.

AbstrakArsitektur merupakan salah satu seni produk kebudayaan, kebudayaan nusantara berakar pada kebudayaan tradisional, begitupun sebaliknya. Arsitektur tradisional sangat beraneka ragam di Indonesia, seiring dengan keanekaragaman suku bangsanya. Arsitektur tradisional merupakan bangunan dengan bentuk dan fungsi yang memiliki ciri khas tersendiri, diwariskan dari generasi ke generasi yang dapat digunakan untuk melalukan kegiatan oleh penduduk sekitar. Oleh karena itu arsitektur tradisional merupakan ungkapan budaya dan cerminan langsung dalam mempresentasikan sesuatu oleh masyarakatnya. Beberapa arsitektur nusantara mengangkat perahu sebagai representasi dari bentuk bangunan. Oleh karena itu penulis tertarik untuk membuktikan tentang korelasi representasi perahu pada beberapa arsitektur nusantara. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode pencarian data melalui studi literatur dengan mengumpulkan data bentuk dan sistem konstruksi pada beberapa Arsitektur Nusantara yang diteliti. Dari data tersebut dapat dihasilkan adanya korelasi representasi bentuk perahu dan sistem konstruksi yang digunakan pada perahu dan bangunan. Therefore traditional architecture is a cultural expression and direct reflection in presenting something by its people. Some archipelago architecture lifts the boat as a representation of the shape of the building. Therefore, the authors are interested in proving the correlation of boat representation in several archipelago architectures. This study uses data search methods through literature studies by collecting data on forms and construction systems in some of the archipelago architectures studied. From this data, a correlation between the shape of the boat and the construction system used in boats and buildings can be produced.

Therefore, traditional architecture is the cultural expression and direct reflection in presenting something by its people. Some Nusantara Architectures adopt boat as the representation for building’s form. Therefore, the author is interested to prove the correlation of boat as representation in some archipelago architectures. This research uses data search method through literature studies by collecting data on some researched archipelago architecture buildings' form and construction system. From these data, a correlation between boat form representation and construction system used in boats and buildings can be concluded.
