Cerebral palsy is the developmental and postural disorder that combines a group of conditions/disease (neuromuscular), occurs in the developing fetal or infant brain, affects movement and intelligence that are ascribed to non-progressive disturbances. Orthotics is the branch of modern health science and rehabilitation that deals with assessment, prescription, fabrication, fitment, and purposeful gait training to the individual who needs orthosis for optimal independence. Orthoses are external devices that applied to increase function, prevent contracture and deformity, maintain the limbs in a functional position, stabilize the segments of the body, support the weak muscle and its functions, increase motor control, reduce spasticity, protect the limbs, and body segments in the postoperative condition.
Introduction: The study purpose is to identify the issues and challenges of the Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) rehabilitation services in IndiaMaterial and Methods: The online search strategy included electronic search engine databases: Google Scholar, PubMed, Google, and Medline along with websites search of world Health Organisation, Government of India relevant Ministries, and Rehabilitation Council of India. All relevant articles were included and included in the present study. Results: In the future, the population growth, older population, increased risk of accidents and other complications may result in more prosthetic and orthotic service demand. To improve their access to the environment and income prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation needs to be endorsed at the grassroots level. Health care expenses can be reduced through better Prosthetic and Orthotic rehabilitation services. and the user's quality of life may enhance through improved movement. Conclusion: Policymakers and the leaders of health, rehabilitation, and social care providers should facilitate access to appropriate prosthetic and orthotic technology that provides functional and economic independence. As functioning prosthetic and orthotic device will promote social acceptance to the physically challenged and improve their quality of life, satisfaction, education, and job opportunities.
Prosthetic devices replace a missing body part lost through disease, trauma, or congenital disorder. The prosthesis is an external physical ‘medicine' that is applied to restore the movement, function, and cosmetic appearance of the lost body parts like a leg, hand, finger, ear, nose, etc. Prosthetists are the healthcare and rehabilitation professionals who assess, examine, prescribe, fabricate, and fit prosthetic devices to the amputees and also train them, if required, in acceptance of the prosthesis to the patient. The person who lost his or her limb through surgery in any form or having absence of limb by birth is known as an amputee. The technological advancement in the field of prosthetics has improved the quality of life of amputees in this century like nothing before and allowed them to interact with the wider world. Prosthesis plays an important role in returning the individual with limb loss to the pre-injury level of function. The future of prosthetic development appears to be promising.
