Teaching spoken English has been a critical issue in the EFL context. The researchers are focusing on how to improve students' public speaking abilities. Several studies, however, have focused on how teachers build EFL learners' self-confidence before focusing on their speaking skills. Lack of self-confidence makes it difficult for beginners to speak, and it also makes it difficult for teachers to design activities that foster students' self-confidence. In response to this growing demand, this article provides an empirical account of how scripted role-plays are used as an innovative learning design in a private high school setting with a majority of students who are beginners. This research applied the Classroom Action Research study. The scripted role-play intervention was carried out for eight meetings following an action research protocol. Classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with students and the teacher were used to collect data. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyze these data. According to the study's findings, the students had finally gained confidence in public speaking. Being confident allowed students to practice more, which improved their speaking skills. The study's findings have three practical implications. First, increasing opportunities for students to practice speaking should be prioritized in EFL classes. Second, providing scripted role-play for beginner students allows them to easily use the language. Finally, before asking students to improve their speaking skills, teachers should focus on developing their students' self-confidence.
One of the essential skills in teaching English is pronunciation. The listener will only understand the speaker if their pronunciation is correct. Applying English pronunciation instructions to students is an integral part of the language. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the podcast which contains relevant and authentic content for global listening comprehension in language learning. As a technological tool, the “British Council” podcast was integrated for learning English pronunciation at English Education in Universitas Borneo Tarakan. This pre-experimental study involved one class of third-semester students who previously learned pronunciation. Because the calculated Z value was less than the -Z table (-4.809 -1.960) and the p-value was less than (0.000 0.050), the decision was made to reject H0, indicating an average significant difference between the pre-test and post-test based on the measured pronunciation. It presented that integrating the podcast shaped students’ pronunciation and made them more confident. This study sheds light on the role of digital media in determining students' pronunciation and language development. It also provides teachers with alternative media for learning pronunciation in and outside of the classroom.
Contextual teaching and learning is one of the outstanding approaches that can help students understand the meaning of teaching materials based on personal, social, and cultural contexts. Due to this, students can have the knowledge and skills to actively build their understanding of the materials. Therefore, this study aims to find out the effectiveness of contextual teaching and learning in improving students' reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 2 Mappakasunggu Takalar. This study involved 56 students of seventh-grade students. This study used a quasi-experimental with two classes, the experimental class, and the control class. Data was collected through a reading test that was given to students before and after giving the Contextual Teaching and Learning method. In analyzing the data, the researchers used the SPSS version 22. The results of data analysis showed that the post-test mean value was 26.04 compared to without using CTL or conventional in the control class, the post-test mean value was 23.71. In addition, the calculation results of the SPSS version 22 application showed that the value of the t-count calculation was 2.3. Compared with table df = 54, namely (2.0) the significance level was 5%, t count > t table, then Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. In other words, accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and reject the null hypothesis (Ho) to test both variables. From the results of hypothesis testing, it was proven that There was a significant effect between the use of contextual learning.
Abstract: Writing scientific articles is still an obstacle for students to complete their final studies. Generally, they find it difficult to write and publish their manuscripts because they have not been trained or even they do not want to publish their writings to online journals. Therefore, students need to be given training to improve their knowledge, understanding, and competence through assistance in writing scientific articles. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide knowledge, understanding, and improvement of student competencies, especially students gathered in the IPMIL Luwu Raya organization. Partners in this service activity were the IPMIL Luwu Raya organization and the Enlish Community of Megarezky Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province, which consisted of 35 participants. The form of this service activity consisted of (1) Preparation; (2) Implementation; and (3) Evaluation. To measure the achievement of the objectives of service activities, instruments were carried out about pretest and posttest. Based on the results obtained, there was an increase in the average pretest value which was originally 38 to 83. All participants (100%) obtained an increase in pretest-posttest scores. The service activity team concluded that training activities and assistance in writing scientific articles with the use of the Publish or Perish application can improve students' ability and understanding in writing scientific articles.
