During the period of conflict that led to the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, the Serbian healthcare system suffered greatly; as a result, relationships between physicians and their patients reached an all-time low. After cessation of the various wars, a group of medical students attempted to assess the state of the patient–physician relationship in Serbia. Their study showed a relationship characterised by very meek patients and rather arrogant physicians. Empowered by their engagement, the medical students constructed a set of standards for achieving a proper patient–physician relationship; physicians should be capable of hearing and understanding patients, with the result that the ensuing empowerment can enable patients and physicians to create a tool for changing the relationship between both parties.

An epidemic of health care reforms is spreading through the world. The basic reason behind the epidemic is the concept of these reforms. Namely, at the time in which Modernity (the main context of mechanicism) has worn out its potentials, they are based on the principles of mechanistic paradigm. Epidemic could fade away if health care reformers would abandon their role of engeneers and turn to catalist role. In that role they could work on reforms which would rely on priciples of evolution. The first result of this reform orientation would be creation of the germ of pluralistic health care systems.

Yugoslavia and later Serbia have puzzled the world since the early 1990s. This article presents a study based on the principles of spiral dynamics that were used to analyze the transformation of South Africa. According to spiral dynamics, Yugoslavia under the joint influence of nationalists and retro-socialists regressed to the egocentric and exploitative level of psychosocial existence and, in spite of recent political changes, has maintained the same centre of gravity. Although its political structure has changed, nationalist and retro-socialist values remain dominant in the cultural domain and in the domain of self. Yugoslavia/Serbia desperately needs the new dynamic process of development. Priorities are the establishment of a hierarchy of authority, self-confrontation and development of widely based enthusiasm. These could lead Serbia to become responsible and mature.
