In this heterogenic patient population with formation of different stoma types, a high complication rate was detected.

Younger age is neither associated with a more severe presentation of diverticulitis nor with a higher incidence in recurrence.

The incidence of complications among patients taking an unrestricted diet during an initial acute uncomplicated episode of diverticulitis was in line with that reported in the literature.

The outcomes of our study show that diverticulitis may not be the ideal condition to start the learning process for laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
