Relative changes in polymerization activity of ethylene, propylene, and butene‐1 in Ziegler‐Natta polymerization were compared by use of TiCl3 samples contaminated with O2 and H2O to various extents. Catalyst depletion varied for the three monomers which supported the existence of different active centers. In butene‐1 polymerizations with the system Al(C2H5)2Cl–TiCl3, the formation of active centers involves an irreversible and a reversible (adsorption) reaction, the former pertaining to the formation of Al(C2H5)Cl2 and dependent upon the purity of the TiCl3. The kinetic treatment of the rate curves suggests a mixed order of catalyst deactivation and again points to the importance of Al(C2H5)Cl2.
ZUS AMM E N F AS S U NG : Es wird eine einfache Apparatur zur Messung des Reaktionsverlaufs bei der Polymerisation gasformiger Monomerer beschrieben. I n einem geschlossenen System wird der Verbrauch des Monomeren volumetrisch verfolgt. Der EinfluB verschiedener Reaktionsbedingungeu auf die Polymerisation von a-Olefinen mit metallorganischen Mischkatalysatoren wird diskutiert. Die Methode bietet eine gute Reproduzierbarkeit und weist eine Fehlerbreite von maximal =k 4 % auf.
SUMMARY:A simple apparatus w measure the course of the polymerization of gaseous monomers is described; the consumption of the monomer is measured volumetrically in a closed system. Influence and variation of reaction conditions on the polymerization of a-olefins with organqmetallic catalysts are discussed. The method presents a good reproducibility and has a range of error off 4%.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Es wird das Alterungsverhalten der Katalysatorsysteme Al(C,H,),/TiCI, und Al(C,H,), Cl/TiCI, untersucht; an den drei Monomeren Athylen, Propylen und Buten-1 wird die Anderung der Polymerisationsaktivitat in Abhangigkeit vom Al/Ti-Verhaltnis fiir verschiedene Alterungszeiten des Gesamtkatalysators gemessen. Nach anfanglichem Anstieg zeigt sich ein mehr oder weniger starker Abfall der PolymerisationsaktivitPt mit steigender Alterungszeit und wachsendem A1 /Ti-Verhaltnis. Die Aktivitatsinderung ist unter vergleichbaren Bedingungen-fiir die drei Monomeren verschieden. Daraus wird auf das Vorhandensein verschieden aktiver Zentren fur die Polymerisation der Monomeren geschlossen.
SUMMARY:The aging of the catalyst systems Al(C2H,),/TiCl, and AI(C,H,),Cl/TiGI, has been investigated. Changes in the polymerization activity with varying Al /Ti-ratio for the three monomers ethylene, propylene, and butene-1 were found for different aging periods of the catalyst mixture. Following an initial increase a pronounced activity decrease was observed with longer aging times and higher A1 /Ti-ratios. The variation of polymerization activity under comparable reaction conditions was different for the three monomers.
