To improve extracapsular cataract extraction the author's team developed, in collaboration with the Geuder eye instruments company, an electronically controlled aspiration pump and an irrigation aspiration needle. Using this apparatus it is possible, with a deep anterior chamber, to remove the lens cortex completely and easily without damaging the posterior lens capsule. The rate of aspiration and the vacuum have to be adjusted in relation to the aspiration hole in the needle. The method of operating the pump, the aspiration and vacuum values so far determined and the surgical technique are described in detail.
