Interior designers around the world have developed a greater awareness of sustainable strategies as the demand for sustainable interior design solutions has increased. Most traditional interior design construction processes have an adverse environmental impact due to the significant consumption of natural resources during manufacturing and installation. In this context, interior designers have the opportunity to adopt sustainable design practices and enhance healthy indoor air quality. They can adhere to sustainable solutions through their choices during the design realization phase, including decisions on materials selection, construction methods, furnishing, and lighting. Despite the abundance of sustainable design research, few studies have addressed the criteria for interior design sustainability. Determining selection criteria for sustainable interior design solutions is important in assisting responsible interior designers. Hence, the objective of this research is to propose a set of criteria for selecting sustainable interior design solutions based on a comprehensive literature review. The paper concludes by reinforcing the importance of having a functional and effective set of criteria to ensure consistent sustainable interior design solutions.
The recent decade has witnessed a rapid evolution of technology, global communications, and networking. These technological manifestations paved the way for smart interior design solutions, and stimulated the environment for designers studying the effect of integrating smart solutions into aspects of sustainable interior design. This pragmatic approach found a considerable positive impact on enhancing overall building sustainability. On a larger scale, this design method will save global resources and create healthy, beneficial, and comfortable environments; moreover, it supports the progression of technological lifestyles. This paper is a review of the theoretical concepts behind smart design and sustainability, exploring the benefits of interior design solutions that incorporate smart technologies with various aspects of sustainability. Keywords: interior design, smart technology, smart interior design, innovative smart design solutions, sustainability, sustainable interior design.
Vernacular interior design consists of spaces that affirm a unique material, have affinity with the local region, and carries the potential to create a sustainable, harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and the built environment. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), sustainable interior design concepts were inherited from vernacular to modern spaces. Despite the abundance of research on sustainable design, few studies have addressed the relationship between vernacular and modern sustainable interior design solutions. Studies on heritage-based interior design solutions indicate the potential to extend and implement traditional concepts into contemporary design. Hence, the objective of this research is to identify the major elements of vernacular sustainable design in the UAE and measure its applicability to contemporary interior design solutions. This paper explores some examples that reflect the impact of the country's heritage on contemporary sustainable interior design, concluding that sustainable concepts in heritage design may inspire contemporary interior designers to reflect on the effectiveness of traditional design solutions.
