Nowadays it is quite common to find vibration serviceability problems in light and slender structures due to the developments of building materials and construction techniques. These structures satisfy ultimate limit state criteria but have the potential of attracting complaints coming from excessive human-induced vibrations. These problems can be found in pedestrian bridges, open-plan layout floors, cantilevered grandstands, etc. Among the investigations carried out, active vibration control (AVC) via inertial mass actuators (or active mass dampers, AMD) and passive vibration control (PVC) via tuned mass dampers (TMD) are the most common and efficient solutions.Firstly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my thesis supervisors: Prof. Iván Muñoz Díaz and Emiliano Pereira González for their continuous support of my Ph.D study and related research, for their patience, motivation, and immense knowledge. Their guidance helped me in all the time of research and writing of this thesis. They are not only my guides in academic areas but also good friends in life, always giving me encourage and keeping me move on. I am really happy with my Spanish name Simón, adopted from Iván and Isidro, which I will keep forever.Besides, I would like to give my thanks to Prof. Jaime García-Palacios and José Manuel Soria Herrera. You are always there to give a helping hand whenever needed. My sincere thanks also goes to Prof. Onur Avci, who helped me to have an unforgettable experience in Qatar University and Doha. All the professors, members and students of the Grupo de Ingeniería Estructural, I am so happy to be part of this big family, thank you
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
