This paper treats t h e a n a l y s i s of a caisson foundation subjected to lateral loads and eabedded i n a multi-layered s o l l with s p e c i a l emphasis on their use i n t r a n s m i s s i o n l i n e structures. The method developed which i s based on the subgrade modulus concept, aside from being useful for the design of a caisson foundation for limlted displacements, can be used for determ i n i n g t h e s t i f f n e s s of a given foundation. A r a t i o n a l method of evaluating. the foundation s t i f f n e s s is v e r y u s e f u l t o the designer since he can then treat t h e s u p e r s t r u c t u r e and the foundation as an e n t i t y r a t h e r t h a n two s e p a r a t e entities and can thus o p t i m i z e t h e t o t a l c o s t of the structure/foundation system. Results from load tests on a prototype caisson in sand and clay, designed by this method, i n d i c a t e reas o n a b l y f a i r c o r r e l a t i o n w i t h t h o s e p r e d i c t e d by the t h e o r e t i c a l a n a l y s i s .
