A summary of the various forms of armour systems that have been employed since the early 1800's to protect rubble mound breakwaters from wave attack is presented. The design and performance of these protection systems are reviewed. It is noted that design procedures published in recent years have severe limitations and that their use may have led to damage of many breakwaters. Improved or alternative design procedures for armour protection systems that overcome some of these limitations are outlined.
