The two surveys were designed, among other things, to test the validity of data regarding expectations of future fertility during the next five years by comparing what was said in the first survey with the actual behaviour of a comparable group of women interviewed five years later.The writer of these lines had the privilege of close association with Whelpton for over 25 years.
