597 Sterility and Population Growth, published in 1959, with Ronald Freedman and Arthur A. Campbell as his co-authors. The second field study was made in 1960 and the resulting book by Whelpton, and his colleagues at the Scripps Foundation, is about ready for press. The two surveys were designed, among other things, to test the validity of data regarding expectations of future fertility during the next five years by comparing what was said in the first survey with the actual behaviour of a comparable group of women interviewed five years later.The writer of these lines had the privilege of close association with Whelpton for over 25 years. Pat was an honest, industrious and capable scholar. He was a warm friend and a good neighbour always.
