The hydrofluoric acid method for the decomposition of silicates has been combined with a convenient procedure for the removal of calcium and magnesium to give a simple method for the determination of the alkali metals in siliceous materials. The results obtained on determining sodium and potassium in standard samples have been very satisfactory. The procedure described is much simpler in manipulative details than the J. Lawrence Smith method.
THE useful life of the solution of soluble starch used as a conventional indicator in lodometry may be prolonged with any one of a number of disinfectants. However, hydrolysis of the starch eventually renders the reagent unsuitable for use, and therefore it has been found advantageous in many cases to replace the solution with a dry preparation of ground starch.
