Using an additive model, this paper distinguishes between the 'pseudo-cooperative', the 'self-centered' cooperative and the 'change-oriented' cooperative. It is argued that the first two types constitute 'deviant' cases whose frequent recurrence may distort the image of the normative cooperative pattern and undermine proclaimed objectives of participatory development.
