Sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of sleepwalking and rapid food ingestion with no recollection of the events upon awakening. Most cases manifest in adulthood, are chronic, cause significant distress to patients and may be associated with use of sedative-hypnotic medications such as zolpidem. Common comorbid conditions include anxiety, insomnia and other sleep disorders. The definition of SRED from the International Classification of Sleep Disorders also includes adverse health consequences from recurrent binge eating and sleep-related injury. Here, we present a case of severe aspiration-induced lung injury secondary to SRED.
