Background: Controlling host phosphoinositide metabolism is critical in bacterial infection. Results: A Legionella effector, SidP, has been identified as a phosphoinositide phosphatase, and its crystal structure was determined. Conclusion: SidP is a PI(3)P phosphatase, which may play a role in controlling bacterial phagosomal lipid composition. Significance: Identification of a novel PI phosphatase suggests the importance of exploiting host PI lipids in many bacterial infections.
