Aims/IntroductionBesides the aging population in China, the following have become serious public health problems: increasing urban population, lifestyle changes and diabetes. We assessed the epidemiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus in China between 2000 and 2014, and analyzed time trends to better determine the prevalence status of diabetes in China and to provide a basis for prevention and decision‐making.Materials and MethodsIn our systematic review, we searched China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese VIP Information, Wanfang and PubMed databases for studies on type 2 diabetes mellitus between 2000 and 2014 in China. Two investigators extracted the data and assessed the quality of the included literature independently. We excluded studies that did not use 1999 World Health Organization criteria for diabetes. We also excluded reviews and viewpoints, studies with insufficient data, studies that were not carried out in mainland China and studies on troops, community, schools or physical examination people. We used stata 12.0 to combine the prevalence of all studies, calculated the pooled prevalence and its 95% confidence interval, and analyzed the differences among men/women, urban/rural areas and year of study. We calculated the prevalence of seven geographic areas of China, respectively, and mapped the distribution in the whole country to estimate the pooled prevalence of each area.ResultsOur search returned 4,572 studies, 77 of which satisfied the inclusion criteria. The included studies had a total of 1,287,251 participants, in which 680,574 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus were recorded. The overall prevalence (9.1%) has been increasing since the 1970s, and it increased rapidly with age. The prevalence of the 65–74 years group was as high as 14.1%. Meanwhile, the prevalence among men/women and urban/rural areas was significantly different. The prevalence was 9.9% for men and 11.6% for women, which were significantly higher than the average at the end of the last century and the beginning of this century. The prevalence rate in urban areas (11.4%) was significantly higher than that in rural areas and in urban‐rural fringe areas, and the prevalence in rural areas (8.2%) was slightly higher than that in urban‐rural fringe areas (7.5%). In addition, the prevalence in each geographic area were estimated and mapped, which showed a large imbalance in the map.ConclusionsOur analysis suggested that type 2 diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent in China. These results underscore the urgent need for the government to vigorously strengthen the management of diabetes prevention and control.
Adverse early life experiences can negatively affect behaviors later in life. Maternal separation (MS) has been extensively investigated in animal models in the adult phase of MS. The study aimed to explore the mechanism by which MS negatively affects C57BL/6N mice, especially the effects caused by MS in the early phase. Early life adversity especially can alter plasticity functions. To determine whether adverse early life experiences induce changes in plasticity in the brain hippocampus, we established an MS paradigm. In this research, the mice were treated with mild (15 min, MS15) or prolonged (180 min, MS180) maternal separation from postnatal day 2 to postnatal day 21. The mice underwent a forced swimming test, a tail suspension test, and an open field test, respectively. Afterward, the mice were sacrificed on postnatal day 31 to determine the effects of MS on early life stages. Results implied that MS induces depression-like behavior and the effects may be mediated partly by interfering with the hippocampal GSK-3β-CREB signaling pathway and by reducing the levels of some plasticity-related proteins.
Background: In this study, we aimed to estimate the equity and efficiency of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) health resource allocation, utilization, and trend in mainland China from 2013 to 2017.Methods: The data were downloaded from the China Health Statistical Yearbook (2014–2018) and the China Statistical Yearbook (2018). The equity of TCM health resource allocation was evaluated through the Lorenz curve, Gini coefficient (G), and Theil index (T) based on population size and geographical area. The efficiency and productivity of TCM health resource utilization were assessed using the data envelopment analysis-based Malmquist productivity index. Results: TCM health resource had an increasing trend every year. The equity allocated by population (G ranging from 0.1 to 0.3) was better than that by geographic region (G > 0.5). T in the intra-groups was higher than those in the inter-groups. The equity of TCM resource allocation was the middle region > eastern region > western region. Most provinces (29 out of 31) had negative productivity changes, suggesting deterioration in productivity. Moreover, the middle region with higher scale sizes had more redundant inputs than the other two regions. However, the low technological development (all technical values <1) might hinder productive progress. Conclusion: The equity of TCM health allocated by the population was better than that by the geographic region. The intra-regional difference was the main reason for inequity sources. Productivities in more than 97% of provinces are inefficient. The frequency distribution of scale efficiency (score > 1) had increased since 2015. However, the frequency distribution of technical change (score > 1) decreased every year. The slow technological progress and low scale size might be the main reasons for low productivity.
Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) using small molecules is still one of the most successful therapeutic strategies in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Previously we reported compound T5369186 with a core of quinolone as a new cholinesterase inhibitor. In the present study, in order to identify new cores for the designing of AChE inhibitors, we screened different derivatives of this core with the aim to identify the best core as the starting point for further optimization. Based on the results, we confirmed that only 4-aminoquinoline (compound 04 and 07) had cholinesterase inhibitory effects. Considering the simple structure and high inhibitory potency against AChE, 4-aminoquinoline provides a good starting core for further designing novel multifunctional AChEIs.
Small molecule cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitors represent one of the most effective therapeutic strategies for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
