X-linked spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is usually associated with feminization and hypogonadism. We were unable to find androgen receptor (AR) in the scrotal skin of three patients with SBMA, and propose that AR abnormality is the cause of the disease.
This is a report of a 20‐year‐old man with typical features of Devic disease (neuromyelitis optica) associated with demyelinating peripheral neuropathy. A sural nerve biopsy showed markedly decreased myelinated fibers of a large diameter. Teased fiber preparations showed segmental remyelination in 50% of examined fibers, as well as a few demyelination. Demyelination of bilateral optic nerves, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves at the same time suggests a possibility of common pathogenetic mechanisms in both the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Rigid spine syndrome is a rare myopathy characterized by mild axial and proximal muscle weakness, limitation of neck and trunk flexion, scoliosis and mild joint contractures. We describe a 20-year-old woman with this syndrome who developed severe respiratory muscle failure disproportionate to the well-preserved extremity muscles. Nocturnal home care ventilation has completely restored her arterial oxygen desaturation during a 5-year follow-up.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
