The reaction of liquid crystal to electric field in vertical-alignment (VA) mode has been studied in this work. A series of experiments with the concave-convex boundary conditions are designed to investigate the effect of fringe field in polymer sustained alignment (PSA) mode. According to the experimental results, we propose a new mechanism of LC alignment named Topography Induced Self-Alignment (TISA). Owing to the TISA mechanism, the transmissive property of VA-LCD pixel has less independence on process variation than the pixel with conventional polymer sustained alignment.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
