Summary Eating speed reportedly relates to body composition and shape. Little is known about the relationship between the objectively assessed eating speed and the body composition and shape. This study examined relationships between eating speed as assessed both objectively and subjectively, and body composition and shape. The following variables of body composition and shape were measured in 84 female college students: body mass, relative body fat mass (%Fat), body mass index (BMI), and circumferences of the waist, abdomen and hip. After measuring the body composition and shape, subjects consumed a 174-kcal salmon rice ball. The following chewing variables were measured by observing videotape recordings of the subjects' faces: number of chews per bite, total number of chews, total meal duration, number of bites, and chewing rate. The subjects were categorized into three groups (fast, moderate and slow) according to their own subjective assessments of the actual eating speed. In objective assessments of the eating speed, the total number of chews and the total meal duration were significantly negatively correlated with the body mass, %Fat, BMI, and circumferences of the waist, abdomen and hip. In subjective eating-speed assessments, the body mass, %Fat, BMI, and circumferences of the waist, abdomen and hip were greater in the fast eating group than in the slow eating group. Both the objectively and subjectively assessed eating speeds are related to the body composition and shape. The present study supports that fast eating may relate to gains in body mass and/or fat mass. The presence of overweight and obesity increases the incidence rates of many health problems, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and some cancers (2). Strategies for effectively preventing the spread of overweight and obesity are therefore urgently needed.Slow eating, which involves chewing food slowly and thoroughly, is an effective strategy for preventing overweight and obesity, with many previous studies having found eating speed to be related to the body composition and shape (3-18). Hereditary renal hypouricemia is characterized by hypouricemia with hyper-uric acid clearance due to a defect in renal tubular transport. Patients with hereditary renal hypouricemia have a higher risk of exercise-induced acute kidney injury (EAKI) and reduced kidney function. Although the best preventive measure is avoiding exercise, there are many kinds of jobs that require occupational exercise. A 27-year-old male police officer suffered from stage 3 AKI after performing a 20-m multistage shuttle run test. His mother had previously been diagnosed as having renal hypouricemia at another facility. The patient had reported having hypouricemia during a health check at a previous police station, but his serum uric acid concentration was within the normal range at our hospital. After treatment, he recovered from EAKI and exhibited low serum uric acid and hyper-uric acid clearance. Since the patient desired to continue his career requiring strenuous exercise, it was difficult to establish a preventive plan against the recurrence of EAKI. Patients with hereditary renal hypouricemia who must undergo strenuous occupational anaerobic exercise are at higher risk of developing EAKI than other workers. The risks of EAKI among patients with hypouricemia should be considered when undergoing physical occupational training.

The purpose of this study was to examine the simultaneous interrelationships of oral health behavior and oral health between mothers and their children using the linear structural relations (LISREL) program. The subjects comprised 117 pairs of mothers and their children aged between 8 and 11 years. Dental status was expressed as DMFT. The Oral Rating Index (ORI) for mothers and ORI for children (ORI-C) were used as measures of gingival health. Hiroshima University Dental Behavioral Inventory (HU-DBI) was used for the assessment of mothers' oral health behavior. HU-DBI had a direct positive relationship to ORI, a direct negative relationship to DFT, and a direct positive association with ORI-C. Toothbrushing had a direct negative relationship to ORI-C. The hypothesized model was found to be closely consistent with the data. These results indicate that the periodontal health status of mothers is directly related to the oral health status of their children, and that toothbrushing by children is directly related to their gingival health.
