Poetry is full of beautiful images, impressive turns of phrases, combined with music through meters, alliterations, rhymes. But if a poet is truly great, he is always in control of his language and subject matter, no matter how different he is from the previous poets. We have witnessed them create new poetry. What I want to focus on is Romantic poetry and its influence on modern poetry: Yeats, Stevens, and Eliot. 1) It is not easy to compare them, for each has had changing poetic style through his life. But to make it easy to discuss them and yet to compare them poetically, I have just picked one poem by each poet, which is in one way or another representative of the poet.
