The effects of electrode configuration and click polarity on brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in dogs were investigated to clarify the inconsistent nomenclature for each peak. Four positive peaks (waves 1, 2, 3 and 4) before a deep negative trough and a fifth positive peak (wave 5) following the trough were the basic components of BAEP in dogs, which were easily identified regardless of recording conditions such as electrode configuration and click polarity. Additional peaks tended to be present when a noncephalic reference electrode and/or single-polarity (rarefaction or condensation) click stimuli were used. The Roman nomenclature for the individual positive peaks of BAEP in dogs is confused owing to variations in the observed waveforms among researchers, but click polarity and/or reference electrode position can explain all the previously reported variations in BAEP waveforms in dogs. When the criteria concerning 'wave V' in the guidelines of BAEP in human beings are applied to avoid further confusion of Roman nomenclature in dogs, it is recommended that the basic five positive peaks (waves 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 as identified easily with Ai-Vertex configuration and alternating clicks) are designated as waves I, II, III, V and VI, respectively. Wave IV (wave 3b) occurs occasionally before wave V in dogs.
BACKGROUND It has been reported that, in patients with intraductal papillary‐mucinous tumor (IPMT) of the pancreas, it is difficult to distinguish adenoma from carcinoma preoperatively. Recently, it has also been reported that telomerase activity was detected in many patients with carcinoma. In this report, the authors used the method of telomerase repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay on pancreatic juice retrieved by endoscopic retrograde pancreatic juice aspiration (ERP aspiration). METHODS Pancreatic juice was collected from 28 patients (13 with intraductal carcinoma and 15 with adenoma) using ERP aspiration at either Hiroshima University Hospital or its affiliated hospitals. Two samples of pancreatic juice were collected from each patient. Each sample was examined by cytology for Papanicolaou staining and TRAP assay. RESULTS Four of 13 IPMT patients (31%) with intraductal carcinoma were diagnosed accurately by cytology. Seven of nine patients who were classified with benign tumors by cytologic assessment had tumors that expressed telomerase activity. Overall, 11 of 13 IPMT patients (85%) with intraductal carcinoma were diagnosed correctly by cytology associated with telomerase activity. All of the IPMT patients with adenoma were classified with benign tumors by cytologic assessment, and telomerase activity was not expressed. CONCLUSIONS In this study, the authors found that telomerase activity was expressed with a comparatively high probability in intraductal carcinoma. These results suggest that telomerase activity in pancreatic juices may be used as an adjunct to cytologic diagnosis and may aid further in distinguishing between benign IPMT and malignant IPMT of the pancreas preoperatively. Antimicrobial peptides are important components of the host innate immune responses by exerting broad-spectrum microbicidal activity against pathogenic microbes. Cy-AMP1 found in the cycad (Cycas revoluta) seeds has chitin-binding ability, and the chitin-binding domain was conserved in knottin-type and hevein-type antimicrobial peptides. The recombinant Cy-AMP1 was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to study the role of chitin-binding domain. The mutants of Cy-AMP1 lost chitin-binding ability completely, and its antifungal activity was markedly decreased in comparison with native Cy-AMP1. However, the antimicrobial activities of the mutant peptides are nearly identical to that of native one. It was suggested that the chitin-binding domain plays an essential role in antifungal, but not antimicrobial, activity of Cy-AMP1.
GM2 gangliosidosis variant 0 (Sandhoff disease, SD) is a fatal, progressive, neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by simultaneous deficiencies of acid β-hexosaminidases A and B. Canine SD has so far been identified only in two purebreeds. In this article, we present the case of a 10 mo old, male dog of mixed breed that developed progressive neurological signs including ataxia, postural deficit, and visual deficits and finally died at the age of 21 mo. The dog was diagnosed with SD on the basis of the results of biochemical and histopathological analyses. This is the third report of canine SD and the first time it has been identified in a mixed breed.
