The conceptual design of the 100 MJ SMES test facility is described. The facility's rated steady conditions correspond to a peak current of 5 kA in the winding which is fully stabilized at a 4 T field and a 50 MJ capacitance, and to converter power of 20 MW. Under forced conditions (1 hour) the peak current rises to 7.1 kA and 5.6 T (a partially stabilized winding) at stored energy of 100 UT and converter power of 30 MW. The winding is made from a multistrand transposed cable (Nb-Ti +Cu).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
