A general theory of the surface polariton states in anisotropic crystals at arbitrary orientation of crystal axes with respect to the surface is developed. General formulae describing dispersive curves and polarization of surface polaritons (SP) are obtained. It is shown that (contrary to the case of SP in isotropic crystals in which they are H-waves) the anisotropic SP polarization is in general of mixed ( E H -) type, and the spatial decay of SP is nonexponential. Attenuated total reflection spectra of anisotropic S P s in a crystal a-LiIO, are investigated. Experimental and theoretical results are in a good agreement. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
